Overtime, bitumen felt will deteriorate increasing the likelihood of roof leaks. If left unprotected, UV rays will cause roofing felts to crack. This process is known as alligatoring. 

As roofing felts begin to age the joints start to weaken. Once the joints split this creates a gateway for water to enter the building and cause further damage.
